INTRODUCTION OF GUEST OF HONOR JOHN A. KIRCHNER, MD

JOHN A. TUCKER, MD

It is a distinct honor and genuine privilege for me to have Dr John A. Kirchner as our Guest of Honor at this 119th meeting of the American Laryngological Association.

John is truly the most eminent senior laryngologist of our time. Born in 1915, he is a fellow Pennsylvanian, of Waynesboro, Pa. He attended college and medical school at the University of Virginia from 1932 to 1940. In 1941, he did his internship at the Charity Hospital, and from 1942 to 1946, he served in the 79th Infantry Division of the US Army, and is the recipient of a Bronze Star. From 1946 to 1950, he was in residency in otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Hospital with Dr Samuel Crowe. In 1947, he married Aline Legault, who was trained in medical illustration by Dr Max Brodel.

From 1951 to 1980, Dr Kirchner was Professor and Chief of Otolaryngology at Yale New Haven Medical Center. From 1980 to 1985, he was staff otolaryngologist, and from 1985 to the present, he has been Professor Emeritus of Otolaryngology at Yale New Haven.

His curriculum vitae contains over 160 public ations, including topics of tonsillectomy, epistaxis, tracheotomy, sinus disease, surgery, laryngeal neurophysiology, swallowing, laryngeal surgery, and, of course, laryngeal pathology as it relates to whole organ laryngeal section study.

His honors include the Moser Award in 1958, the Casselberry Award in 1966, the Newcomb Award in 1969, and the De Roaldes Award in 1985. He is a Commonwealth Fund Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He was awarded the Semon Medal from the University of London in 1981, and is a member of the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum.

His presidencies include the New England Otolaryngological Society in 1965, the American Association of Head-Neck Surgeons in 1977, the American Laryngological Association in 1979, and the Triological Society in 1981. He is an honorary member of the Japan Bronchoesophagological Society, the German Society of Otolaryngology Head-Neck Surgery, and the Italian Society of Otolaryngology. He and his wife, Aline, have 3 sons and 2 daughters.
