The Daniel C. Baker, Jr, Lectureship was established in 1975 by the Baker
family, friends, patients, and colleagues in his memory and in appreciation
of his dedication to the field of otolaryngology. Dr Baker was President
of the American Laryngological Association (ALA) in 1974, past Chairman
of the Department of Otolaryngology at Columbia University, and also a
recipient of the ALA's Newcomb Award in 1971. I had the privilege of getting
to know Dr Baker when I had the opportunity to spend 4 months with Dr Conley
during my residency. Dr Baker certainly was a gentleman in every sense
of the word.
I would like to express appreciation to the Selection Committee members,
Drs John Tucker and Jonas Johnson. The committee considered several nominees
that ranged from otolaryngologists to non-otolaryngologists and even to
non-physicians. However, there is one name that surfaced to the top immediately,
and that is this year's awardee. Paul Ward graduated from Emerson University
in Indiana. He received his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins College
of Medicine and served his internship at Henry Ford Hospital. His residency
was completed at the University of Chicago. Paul began his academic career
at the University of Chicago but then quickly moved on to chair the department
at Vanderbilt University from 1964 to 1968. He then became Chairman at
UCLA and served in that position for 24 years. Paul has published in excess
of 340 peer-reviewed publications, produced 38 movies, and edited or authored
9 textbooks. He is the recipient of many national awards, but has been
especially recognized previously by the ALA. In 1992, he was the recipient
of the Newcomb Award and, in 1994, received the De Roaldes Award, as well
as being the Association's Guest of Honor. He currently serves as our President-Elect.
This man has been a role model to many in this audience, including myself.
Our specialty and our patients have benefited immensely from his boundless
energy in research, education, and patient care. It is a pleasure and honor
for me to introduce Paul Ward, Professor and Chief Emeritus of the Division
of Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA, who will deliver the 21st Daniel C. Baker
Lectureship, entitled "The
Shifting Sands of Medical Ethics." |
