Presentation Of The American Laryngological Award To Eugene N. Myers, MD

HAROLD C. PILLSBURY III, MD

Dr. Eugene N. Myers is the 2001 recipient of the American Laryngological Association Award. This award was established as a means of recognizing outstanding individuals for achievement in medicine or another field who have made significant contributions to laryngology. Dr Myers is indeed deserving of this award, for he is highly respected throughout the world as an outstanding surgeon, scientist, and educator. He has served the American Laryngological Association faithfully for many years, as Secretary from 1982 to 1988, and as President in 1989. He remained on the Council through 1991. Dr Myers received the Newcomb Award in 1993, and was the Guest of Honor at the ALA annual meeting in 1995.

Dr Myers attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from Temple University School of Medicine. His residency in otolaryngology was at Harvard, in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and he spent 2 years at the National Institutes of Health as a teaching fellow. He subsequently served as a fellow in head and neck surgery with John Conley, and ultimately joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh. He has remained at Pittsburgh throughout his career, and has served as its Chair of Otolaryngology since 1972, building one of the strongest academic departments of otolaryngology in the world.

His list of achievements is vast. He has served numerous professional societies and journals in many capacities. Of note, he has been President of the American Board of Otolaryngology, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, and the Pan American Association of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He has made tremendous contributions to our specialty.
