The Montgomery thyroplasty implant was designed to specifically medialize
the vocal process of the arytenoid. In over 300 procedures done by the
senior author, reliable closure of the posterior commissure was achieved
in the vast majority of cases. No patients in this series have gone on
to require arytenoid adduction procedures. Experience has shown that it
is necessary to carefully dissect the perichondrium from the cartilage
lateral to the vocal process of the arytenoid to allow proper implant positioning.
These results have been confirmed by postoperative clinical and radiographic
evaluations, as well as cadaveric dissection. The results of this analysis
are presented. |
