GERALD
B. HEALY, MD
They were light years ahead of their time. They had the vision to see
an innovation in another field, military technology, and immediately recognize
its potential for use in the care of the sick and needy. From that day
in the early 1 970s when the carbon dioxide laser was first used in the
human, to today, when surgical lasers are a vital part of every operating
room, the evolution of a dream of two dedicated otolaryngologists has been
phenomenal. I should also mention Dr Tom Polanyi and Mr Bob Wallace, the
scientists who worked with Drs Jako and Strong to make the surgical laser
a reality.
The American Laryngological Association is proud to present the annual
Association award to Geza Jako and Stuart Strong for their vision, dedication
to excellence, and desire to improve the quality of life of their fellow
human beings. I am particularly proud to make this presentation, as these
two outstanding physicians were my teachers and personal role models. Dr
Jako and Dr Strong, I am delighted you are here to receive this well-deserved
honor in person. On behalf of the American Laryngological Association,
please accept our annual award for the development and application of the
surgical laser.
