Dear Fellow ALA Members:
The 126th Annual Meeting of the American Laryngological Association was
held on May 13-14 2005 at the Boca Raton Resort and Club in Boca Raton,
Florida. Dr. Robert H. Ossoff presided at the meeting. This year’s
meeting consisted of two one-half day Scientific Programs with a diverse
combination of clinical and research papers and posters, talks that included
the State of the Art Lecture and a joint lecture with the Triological Society.
President Ossoff should be congratulated for his creativity and finesse
in conceiving a superb meeting and a most pleasant social program.
During the first business meeting, Active Fellows voted on two proposals
for amendments to the by-laws. The first proposed change was to amend the
by-laws by removing all reference of the term, “Rhinology.” The
second proposal was to institute membership dues for Corresponding Fellows
that would be equal to half the amount of dues paid by Active Fellows.
Both ballots passed.
Opening the first day of the Scientific Sessions, President Ossoff’s
address discussed “The Future Legacy of the ALA.” He then presented
Presidential Citations to Alfio Ferlito, M.D. of Udine, Italy; Charles
N. Ford, M.D., of Ann Arbor, Michigan; James L. Netterville, M.D., of Nashville,
Tennessee; and Gayle E. Woodson, M.D., of Springfield, Illinois.
This year’s Guest of Honor, Stanley M. Shapshay, M.D., Boston, Massachusetts,
gave a talk entitled, “Mentoring – Vital to the Future of
Laryngology.”
The 30th Daniel C. Baker
Jr., Lecture, “Laryngology Fellowship – Future
Directions in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery”, was
presented by Harold C. Pillsbury, III, M.D., of Chapel, Hill, North Carolina.
This year’s lecture was held jointly with the Triological Society’s
Joseph Ogura Lecture entitled, “Unprofessional Behavior – Enough
is Enough” that was presented by Gerald B. Healy, M.D., of Boston,
Massachusetts.
Jonathan Aviv, M.D., of New York, New York, was the State of the Art Lecture.
Dr. Aviv’s topic was “Transnasal Esophagoscopy: From Curiosity
to Standard of Care.”
Each session also had a panel discussion. During the first day session, “Challenging
Cases for the Laryngologists” was moderated by Gaelyn Garrett, M.D.,
of Nashville, Tennessee. Her panelists were Mark Courey, M.D., San Francisco,
California; Peak Woo, M.D., of New York, New York; Henry Hoffman, M.D.,
Iowa City, Iowa. James Netterville, M.D., of Nashville, Tennessee, moderated
the panel, “Impaired Vocal Fold Motion,” with the panel comprised

M.B.A., of Irvine, California; Paul W. Flint, M.D., Baltimore, Maryland;
and, Robert T. Sataloff, M.D., D.M.A., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Neurolaryngology Study Group, moderated by Dr. Crumley, this year

panelists were Dr. Gerald Berke, Los Angeles, California; Dr. Charles N.
Ford, Madison, Wisconsin; Dr. Henry Hoffman, Iowa City, Iowa; and Dr. James
Netterville, Nashville, Tennessee.

the 17th Annual American Laryngological Association

The Gabriel F. Tucker Award was presented to William P. Potsic, M.D. of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for his numerous contributions to education
and research in pediatric laryngology.
A beach theme, coinciding with the meeting in Boca Raton, Florida, was
used for President’s Reception and Banquet. In addition to the decorations
used to provide the backdrop, entertainment was provided by The Alley Kats,
a nationally renowned acapella quartet from California. Dr. Ossoff was
a superb host where several showed their dancing skills during entertainment
phase of the event. Dr. Roger L. Crumley was presented the James
E. Newcomb as a mark of esteem and appreciation of his service to the ALA. This award
also recognized Dr. Crumley for the outstanding contributions to the literature
of laryngology he has made throughout his career.
The Resident Research Award was presented to Samir Khariwala, M.D., Cleveland,
Ohio, for his manuscript, “Laryngeal Transplantation: A Novel 12
Day Immunosuppression Regimen in the Rat Provides Graft Survival at 6 Months.” Dr.
Ossoff presented Dinesh K. Chhetri, M.D., Los Angeles, California, with
the Young Faculty/Investigator Research Award for his presentation, “Long-term

In the 2005 Spring Newsletter, Tadashi Nakashima, M.D., Kurume,
Japan was incorrectly identified as being the recipient of the first place
