American Laryngological Voice Research and Education Foundation

Scientists estimate that several million Americans are afflicted with disorders of the voice and larynx. Four to five times that number are considered to be at risk due environmental factors known to be caustic, such as air pollution and smoking.

For those whose job requires extensive use of the voice (such as teachers, singers, politicians, newscasters, actors) the cost and consequences associated with having a 'disabled voice" are particularly high. Absence from work and the resulting loss of productivity due to causes ranging from vocal abuse and other laryngeal trauma to specific congenital, neuromuscular, or tumor-related disorders, are costly. They affect not only the individuals afflicted, but their care-givers, and society as a whole.

Thus, there is a critical need to focus attention on the substantial (and growing) gap in support needed for funding quality research and education. Without a focussed commitment, the scientific advances that are essential for the development of new cost-effective diagnostic tools and treatment modalities cannot be achieved; and, education on effective prevention, early detection and timely treatment of voice and larynx disorders can not be advanced.

ALVRE is dedicated to bridging the existing gap, fostering discovery and sharing the knowledge that is gained.

  • Raise funds to support research in laryngeal and other voice disorders and foster collaborative research across relevant disciplines.
  • Increase awareness and understanding of laryngeal and voice disorders through public, medical, and professional education.
  • Provide encouragement to young investigators by providing first-time grant support.
  • Serve as a key resource for information from and access to the leading experts in the field dealing with laryngeal and voice disorders.
  • Make readily available the best new scientific information in the field and promote awareness of available resources and publications in the field - in a timely fashion.
  • 1.Develop a public awareness program on the prevention, early detection and timely diagnosis of laryngeal and voice disorders.

    2. Provide educational resources and training through publications and seminars for physicians and other health-care providers.

    3. Provide educational resources for professional voice users and voice educators regarding laryngeal and voice disorders in the form of publications and seminars.

    4. Provide financial support for ten laryngeal/ voice projects annually.

    5. Provide the expertise and oversight for one large federally funded clinical trial.

    6. Be a primary resource for young investigators seeking first-time funding.

    7. Provide recognition for outstanding work in the field by young investigators - including paid summer research opportunities.
